Earlier this year, I had written about Martin's newest
book, and I enjoyed his writing style so much - so graceful, witty, and rhythmic - that I decided to read one of his earlier books. Again, the story is a minor one - a Neiman Marcus girl and the two men in her life, a young slacker and and older millionaire - but the writing is so well-done it comes off like a modern fairy tale. The characters are all deeply flawed, yet still likable. It is not a book if you're looking for huge laughs, but it's a smart read, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. Grade: A-
